Music

Our Curriculum Intent for Music

At Cuddington, our children’s music education is rooted in skill progression, ensuring challenge is provided for every child and technical vocabulary is taught for each unit.

Each unit of lessons follows the key four stages of music teaching and learning:

-Listen and appraise music within the genre they are learning.

-Sing and immerse themselves in the song.

-Accompany and play the song.

-Compose their own melody using the skills they have learnt during the unit.

Through this, children are given the opportunity to explore a variety of genres and historical periods of music alongside playing a range of instruments.

Weekly, our school come together to sing and share music with one another whilst continuing to sing daily within their own classes. We invest in children’s skills as musicians to ensure that they gain the confidence and skills to perform within school and at local community events. Children will leave Cuddington as confident musicians with a love for singing and a range of rich musical experiences.

How do we provide for all learners?

Music gives children and young people an opportunity to express themselves, to explore their creativity, to work hard at something, persevere and shine (DfE 2022) no matter their academic or musical ability. This is a core part of our musical education at Cuddington. Children of all abilities are given the same opportunity to access our music curriculum and some have excelled with  many children with SEND going on to have private music lessons in school. With minimal reading or writing involved in the curriculum, children have very few barriers to accessing music education across the school.
