Tawny Owls Year 4
2025 - 2026

Teacher: Miss Michiels

Support Staff: Mrs Henderson, Mrs Austin & Mrs Harvey

Spring 2 Learning Overview:

Reading

As Readers in Year 4, children read a range of high-quality texts, including The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, Podkin One-Ear by Kieran Larwood and The Night of the Gargoyles by Eve Bunting. They develop fluency, comprehension and confidence, discussing characters, themes and events while justifying their ideas using evidence from the text.

Reading is closely linked to the wider curriculum. Children explore non-fiction texts about habitats, living things and animals, and read myths, legends and poetry. This breadth of reading supports children in becoming enthusiastic, thoughtful and skilled readers.

Writing

As Writers in Year 4, children write for a range of purposes inspired by rich texts including The Whale by Ethan and Vita Murrow, Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton, The Journey by Francesca Sanna and Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau by Jennifer Berne, alongside a whole-school Shakespeare project based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare. They write narratives, a newspaper report, a persuasive letter, diary entries, an information guide and a biography.

There is a strong focus on clear, engaging and well-structured writing. Pupils develop drafting and editing skills, take pride in presenting their work neatly in pen, and are taught handwriting and spelling explicitly, including the Year 3/4 statutory word list.

Mathematics

As Mathematicians in Year 4, children work with numbers up to 10,000 using the First 4 Maths programme, developing secure place value understanding and confidence with written and mental calculation methods. They extend their knowledge of Roman numerals up to 1,000; progress to finding the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and regular polygons; enhance their skills in multiplying two-digit numbers and dividing larger numbers; and deepen their understanding of fractions, including equivalent fractions and decimal numbers.

There is also a strong emphasis on multiplication and division in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Across all areas, pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, solve problems systematically and approach maths with confidence and resilience.

Create Learning Trust

In education, teachers often talk about the moment when something 'clicks' for a child - when a concept is grasped, imagination sparked, or idea formed.
Create Learning Trust, a network of academies in Northwich, Cheshire, is committed to giving children and young people those moments. We embrace innovation, share best practice, and shape opportunities to create an environment that inspires both staff and students.
